History of Hereke Rugs
The designs and motifs of fine Hereke carpets are products of over centuries from Ottoman Emperial Era.The Hereke rugs were first introduced through the creation of the imperial manufacture in 1841 from the Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I. Best artists and rug weavers were gathered in Hereke (around 80km from Istanbul) and they began weaving and knotting best quality Hereke carpet rugs.
Only in early 20th Century, Hereke rugs were allowed to be sold in Istanbul through some rug dealers. Since then, and also with the fall of the Ottoman empire, Hereke rugs continued to be produced in Hereke region.
What are the types of Hereke rugs
Real Hereke rugs have double knots as other Turkish rugs. This Hereke is 100% double knot and has the finest knot density that one can find on wool Hereke rugs.
There are two types of Hereke rugs: wool Hereke rug (on cotton warp) and silk Hereke rugs. The top quality Silk Hereke rugs are very fine and can have up to 5,000,000 knots per square meters. On the other hand, the finest quality wool Hereke carpets would have up to 500,000 knots per square meters. Silk Hereke rugs are finer due to the fine thread of silk as a material compared to wool.
Some Hereke carpets have 225-289-324 and more double knots to the square centimeter and have an immeasurable value.
What are the meanings of symbols on Hereke carpet rugs?
The warp and weft as well as the knots are pure silk, decorated with patterns of the most beautiful flowers of nature, such as roses, carnations and tulips. The almond, motif originating from far east denotes the duality of love and passion, night and day, male and female. The Dragon is another characteristic of Turkish Hereke rugs that guards the tree of life. The tree symbol together, such as birds, tree of life and dragon stand for continuity of the soul and immortality. The star is used to indicate the eternity of the tree of life.
