History, Origins of Carpets & Rugs

Origins of carpet making

The carpets were made, as also referred in the Bible, from fifth century before Christ. Russian archeologists had found five carpets in south Siberia, near the city of Bijks, by Altai Mountains, named after the name of Pasyryk. These early findings are explicitely important for the origin of the human heritage of carpet.

With time, the Silk Road experiences, invasions of Huns, Mongols, Arabs and Turks towards the West increased the awareness of the carpet for Western societies. Carpet and Rugs moved from being a nomadic item of daily need into being an "indispensable Decorative and aesthetic household item" throughout the millenniums.

Rug producing Regions

Today in the world, there are five important weaving destinations of carpets: India & China, Iran & Afghanistan, Caucasus & Russia, Turkmenistan & Central Asia and Turkey. They are all varied in terms of designs, colours, materials and technics.

Turkish carpets & rugs

On the Turkish carpets, depending on the region, one can see floral, geometric, or symbolic figures. This is also related to the historical facts such as mixtures of Asian & middle eastern & European & African ethnicities throughout the millenniums in Turkey. In the Eastern regions of Turkey, the carpets can remind us Caucasian or Iranian carpets, in the Western region of Turkey, carpet can be knotted by the symbols of Balkan or east European cultural influences.

The dominant colour in the Turkish carpet is red, this colour symbolize the richness, happiness, and joy. The green is a symbol of paradise, the blue is a reflection of nobility. The yellow has a meaning of protection from bad energy; the black is a symbol of reservedness.
