Authentic handmade carpets increase in value over time

Handmade carpets are made to last! They last 20, 30, 50 or even 100 years (see our Antique collection for old carpets). Like fine wines, they improve with age. The natural fibers and dyes used in the creation of our rugs react to changes in the air with their colors and hues becoming more complex as the years pass. Back to Top

The color variations in handmade carpets are a sign of authenticity

Hand-knotted and woven carpets are made using natural fibers and dyes. Color variation, or abrash, is common, especially among tribal rugs where weavers harvest local plants to dye the wool shorn from the sheep in their own flocks. Back to Top

Our carpets contain thousands / millions of hand-tied knots

Each of the carpets displayed in our website is one-of-a-kind and their number of knots per square cm (or KPSI - the number of knots per square inch) is the highest selected for each category. The total number of knots depends mostly on the materials used and the skills of the individual weavers.

Typically a medium/small size carpets that measures 220 x 140 cm (or 4’7’’ x 7’3’’) can have a number of knots that varies from 200,000 up to 3 million. Here goes the calculation:

• Low density carpets have around 3 knots per cm: therefore 220 x 3 x 140 x 3 = 277,300 knots on the carpet
• Good level of density carpets have around 5 knots per cm: therefore 220 x 5 x 140 x 5 = 770,000 knots on the carpet
• High density carpets have around 8 knots per cm: therefore 220 x 8 x 140 x 8 = 1,971,200 knots on the carpet
• Very High density carpets have around 10 knots per cm: therefore 220 x 10 x 140 x 10 = 3,080,000 knots on the carpet

As you can notice the number of knots grows exponentially when the density grows. As a reference, we provide in CarpetView, the density per square meter such as:

• 90,000 knots per square meter – which is equivalent to 3 knots per cm or 7.62 knots per inch or 7.62 x 7.62 = 58 knots per square inch (KPSI)
• 250,000 knots per square meter - which is equivalent to 5 knots per cm or 12.7 knots per inch or 12.7 x 12.7 = 161 knots per square inch (KPSI)
• 640,000 knots per square meter - which is equivalent to 8 knots per cm or 20.32 knots per inch or 20.32 x 20.32 = 413 knots per square inch (KPSI)
• 1000,000 knots per square meter - which is equivalent to 10 knots per cm or 25.14 knots per inch or 25.14 x 25.14 = 645 knots per square inch (KPSI) Back to Top

It can take years to produce a handmade rug

Every carpet in CarpetView.com is handmade and hand-knotted, so it's difficult to determine precisely how long it takes to weave each one. We can estimate the time it would take for each carpet to be complete if the weaver were to work for 6 hours a day, 6 days a week.

An experienced weaver would complete a 200 x 300 cm carpet (or 6’7’’ x 9’10’’), with 10 knots per cm (or 645 knots per square inch - KPSI) within 30 months – or 2 years and half - to complete!

A carpet of that size has approximativaly 6 million knots, and with an average rate of 1 knot per second the carpet can be complete within 30 months:

• 1 knot per second
• 60 knots per minute
• 1,440 knots per hour
• 8,640 knots per day (estimated 6 hours of work per day)
• 207,360 knots per month (estimated 24 days of work per month)
• 6,220,800 knots for 30 months – The carpet is complete (without considering time spent for dying, preparing the materials, etc)! Back to Top
