About Yagcibedir rugs & Bergama carpets |
Yagcibedir rugs are made by a nomadic tribe in the areas of Bergama, which is located in the northwest of Turkey, near the Aegean Sea. The villages in which the carpets are made include Mazilar, Islamlar, Karakecili, Yenikoy, Karaoba, and Kocaoba. These rugs are hand-woven with pure lamb’s wool, which makes them extremely soft, and they have been produced in the area since the 15th century. Legend says that there was a butter seller, called Yagcibedir, from Kaiser and he supplemented his income by making and selling carpets. He taught his skills to the local people and they named the style of carpet after him.
The rugs are well known for their use of dark blue, dark red, black, and white and can also include softer reds and pinks. The wefts are usually dyed red, the blue represents the blue of the Aegean Sea, and the white is the natural colour of the wool. All of the rugs have a soft pile that is clipped short so that the pattern is clearly visible. Each and every Yagcibedir rug is hand-knotted and hand-woven and dyed with all natural dyes. As the carpets age, the deep reds fade into soft brown.
Yagcibedir rugs are also recognized by their use of geometric figures, stylized birds, and the stars of Solomon. Some designs show a modern influence and some designs are tribal in their appearance, but the carpets are always recognizable as the colours and patterns have remained virtually the same since the carpets were first made. The rugs also generally have either five or seven borders. The seven borders represent the seven stages in which the universe formed. Yagcibedir rugs are made in a range of sizes from the size of a prayer rug to small area rugs and large area rugs and they are generally square in shape.
At CarpetView.com we offer a wide selection of Yagcibedir rugs and other Turkish rugs. We take pride in offering only the best and as such, we do not use a distributor or any other kind of middle man. Instead, we work hard to source all of our rugs and carpets ourselves and we go directly to the weavers to get them. This way we can ensure that each and every carpet is of the highest quality.
Once we choose our carpets and rugs, we put them through three quality assurance checks. One check happens when we purchase the rug, one when we photograph it and put it into storage, and one before we ship it to the customer. We take nothing for chance because we want our customers to receive the best.
